Meet Your CPA

Collin Dowdell, CPA

Collin founded CDowdell CPAs to bring straightforward, proactive accounting to St. George and Southern Utah. Clients describe him as knowledgeable, responsive, and easy to talk to — qualities you don't always find when you're used to chasing your accountant for answers.

With more than 15 years of experience, Collin and his team work with individuals, families, and small businesses across Southern Utah and nationwide. Every engagement is led by a licensed CPA — not a seasonal preparer — so you get advice you can act on, not just a return you can file.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions we hear from St. George business owners and individuals exploring whether to work with a CPA. Don't see yours? Call us at (435) 669-9750.

    • How much does it cost to work with a CPA in St. George?

Our fees depend on the complexity of your situation and the services you need. Simple individual returns start at a competitive flat rate, while business returns, multi-state filings, and ongoing advisory engagements are quoted based on scope. We provide a transparent quote during your free consultation — no hidden fees, and many clients find their tax savings more than cover our fee.

    • When should I hire a CPA instead of using tax software?

Tax software works well for simple W-2 situations. Consider hiring a CPA if you own a business, have rental property, sold investments or crypto, have income in multiple states, are self-employed, recently went through a major life event (marriage, home purchase, inheritance), or simply want proactive tax planning rather than a once-a-year filing. Our tax-savings calculator can give you a rough estimate of what a CPA could save you.

    • What should I bring to my first meeting?

For your free initial consultation, just bring a brief picture of your situation — recent tax returns (last 1-2 years) and a rough list of income sources are helpful but not required. Once you decide to work with us, we send a clear checklist tailored to your situation. You can upload everything securely through our client portal, so no need to bring paper.

    • Do you only serve clients in Utah, or do you work nationwide?

We're based in Washington, Utah (just outside St. George) and serve clients throughout Southern Utah in person. Thanks to secure document portals and video calls, we also work with individuals and businesses across the United States. We're licensed to handle federal returns nationwide and can coordinate state filings for all 50 states.

    • Do you work with small businesses, or only individuals?

Both. We serve solopreneurs, freelancers, LLCs, S-corps, partnerships, and growing companies, in addition to individuals and families. Our business services range from monthly bookkeeping and payroll to CFO-level advisory. We can also coordinate your business and personal returns together, which often surfaces tax-saving opportunities that get missed when those are handled separately.

    • Do you offer year-round tax planning, or only seasonal tax prep?

Both, but our highest-value work is year-round planning. Tax preparation in March is largely about reporting what already happened. Proactive planning earlier in the year — entity structure, retirement contributions, equipment purchases, estimated payments — is where we save clients the most money. Most of our clients work with us on a year-round basis after their first tax season.

    • What is the difference between a CPA, an accountant, and a bookkeeper?

A bookkeeper records day-to-day transactions. An accountant prepares financial statements and may file taxes. A CPA (Certified Public Accountant) is state-licensed, must meet education and exam requirements, completes continuing education, and can represent you before the IRS. CPAs also bear professional and ethical responsibility for the accuracy of the returns and statements they sign.

    • Can you handle multi-state taxes or remote-work situations?

Yes. We routinely prepare returns for clients who moved during the year, work remotely from a different state than their employer, own property in multiple states, or run businesses with nexus in several jurisdictions. Multi-state filings are one of the most commonly mishandled situations in DIY tax prep — we'll make sure each state is filed correctly and you don't pay tax twice.

    • How do I get started?

Schedule a free initial consultation through the "Get Started" button at the top of this page, or call us at (435) 669-9750. We'll spend 20-30 minutes understanding your situation, answer your questions, and give you a transparent quote. No obligation, no high-pressure sales.
